You never know how deeply you miss being around people who share a history with you until you’re sitting on the deck, ticking off names on both hands of great-aunts and great-uncles who are living and those who are dead.

“Teet — He goes on this hand.”

“Teet? What’s his real name?”

“Theodore. Every single one of them had a nickname. Viola was Sis, and Ethel was Pale. Then there’s Jim — he goes on this hand.”

“That’s a normal name. Is he James?”

“No, his real name’s Vince.”

“Oh, well. That makes sense.”

I have so had that conversation with grampa, and yes they all have nicknames. How did grampa end up with Bob for Robert? That is what does not make sense. It should be Tom or something further away from Robert, and don’t forget Pose for Roselien????? I am not sure exactly what it is but thats another one. Thanks for the Happy Birthday wish, I tried to call you back.
